3D Printing Requirements

What is your Printer's Technical Specifications?

What file formats do you accept?
We prefer to accept .STL files, as our machines run best using this format. We also accept .OBJ and VRML (.WRL) files. It is best to “save as” or export a .STL file for use in 3D printing.

.OBJ – .OBJ file is a geometry definition file format similar to .STL and used and developed from the animation industry.

.STL – .STL is commonly referred to as stereolithography and is widely used for rapid prototyping and computer-aided manufacturing. .STL files describe only the surface geometry of a three-dimensional object without any representation of color or texture.

.WRL – .WRL is an extension of the .VRML virtual reality model language file format. It contains the colour and texture maps needed to be printed in relation to the objects 3D surfaces. For example a bust of a person or a family pet.

How much does 3D Printing cost?
It could be a little, and it could be extremely high. Depends on the way you carry it; the costs may vary. If you manage to buy a 3D printer, it might cost a bit much at first, but you can rely on its fast ROI in long term. If you need 3D printing once in a while, using 3D printing services company is less risky and much cheaper. It’s also depends on the product and material you desire to print. Plastics are always cheaper than metals.

What is 3D printing?
3D printing is process of making an object through a 3D file (or a digital file). It starts by designing an object by a design software (e.g. 3DS Max or Rhinoceros). After completing, the designer needs to convert the file format suitable for 3D Printing (like .STL). After that, the designer uploads that file into the 3D printer’s software. This software prepares the file for printing, and finally can be 3D printed by operator’s command.

We can conclude that the term 3D Printing is a more common way to demonstrate a making method which is done layer by layer.
